Sniper
Today is August 4th, and it reminds me of August 4th, 1993, the day that “Sniper” was released on video. Oh, how I anticipated that day. My buddy Dave and I were very eager to get our hands on this film, as it was rated R and we hadn’t been able to see it in theatres, being only 13 years old. I was returning from Camp Sea Gull around August 12, and so it was Dave’s job to rent the flim in time for my arrival. We immediately set up two VCRs on top of the TV to record a copy of the film for ourselves. Later we used our copy to splice scenes from the Tom Berrenger classic into our own movies, which we were always making (though never finishing). We got especially good usage out of the gunshot sound effect, and used it in a number of our feature films, including our tour de force, “Child Killer,” starring Dave as a homicidal teenager. In fact, that really deserves to be uploaded to YouTube…

Hey bud im amazed that you remembered the actual release date of sniper. I have a challenge (I definatly saw sniper in theatres, with my dad, maybe you were there too?). We definatly violated copyright laws in regards to sniper in many ways several times over. Fun times man…..I miss those days. in the words of stevie wonder “I wish those days could come back once more, why did those days ever have to go”. in the words of dave hanft “why must I keep on getting older”.
I wish we could go back and bring a computer with video editing software!!

True, many a copyright violation was shattered in the studios of HanftPort pictures. Yet I think the term “creative license” may be applied in our defense. I definitely did not see Sniper in the theatre with your dad, or with anyone else for that matter. Now, I think you mentioned something about a challenge? Right now the only challenge I’m facing is trying to upload “Child Killer” to YouTube and post it on this blog. Since the movie is only about 7min long, it’s possible. However, my computer has chosen this time to not recognize DVDs or burn CDs anymore. Yes, I have “Child Killer” on DVD because my dad somehow dug it out of the old tapes and burned it for me. The most hilarious part is that the brief movie is followed by close to an hour of Rebecca and her friends at RHS filming some kind of weird school project which redefines the word boring.
